The reasons behind the distancing

Cruise and Holmes began their relationship in 2005 and welcomed Suri in April 2006. Months later, they married in a lavish ceremony in Italy, but the marriage ended in 2012 when the actress filed for divorce.

At 20 years old, the college student legally stopped using the surname Cruise and changed her name to Suri Noelle, according to the voter registration records of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, documents accessed by People magazine. Currently, Suri is studying at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she made the change when registering to vote during her first academic year in October 2024.

The chosen surname was not a coincidence. "Noelle" corresponds to her mother Katie Holmes' middle name, with whom she has maintained a close relationship since her parents separated.
