The regulation allows for the review of permits due to debts, informal employment, or extremist ties

The Swedish Parliament approved a law on Monday that allows authorities to revoke residence permits for immigrants due to misconduct, in a new sign of the rightward shift taking place in Europe in response to the problems of mass immigration and a lack of integration that the left has ignored for years.

The regulation enables the Swedish state to review permits when there are behaviors deemed incompatible with staying in the country. Among the examples mentioned by the government are non-payment of debts or taxes, undeclared employment, commission of crimes, and ties to extremist organizations.

The law applies to both pending residence permits and those that have already been granted, marking a significant change in Swedish immigration policy. The Migration Agency will be responsible for analyzing each case, while decisions can be appealed to a migration court.

The Minister of Migration, Johan Forssell, had already summarized the spirit of the project when presenting it in March, stating that those who do not strive to do the right thing should not take their stay in Sweden for granted. The residence permit will not be disconnected from the beneficiary's behavior.

The initiative was driven by the Swedish government and the Sweden Democrats, the nationalist party that supports the administration in Parliament. The approval also comes on the eve of the parliamentary elections in September, where immigration and security will again take center stage in the public agenda.

The opposition and leftist organizations criticized the regulation, arguing that it could open the door to arbitrary decisions. Civil Rights Defenders, based in Stockholm, warned that the law could create uncertainty about what actions or expressions could be used against a person.

However, the advancement of the regulation reflects a broader political change in Europe and an awareness of the impact of indiscriminate immigration. Countries that promoted lax immigration models for years are now facing social pressures, insecurity, fiscal imbalances, and growing difficulties in integrating populations incompatible with Western life.
