The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) determined that Corinthians from Brazil must pay a multimillion-dollar sum to Paraguayan footballer Matías Rojas, who terminated his contract with the club last year due to salary delays and then joined River.
Currently at Portland Timbers in the United States, Rojas will receive approximately 9 million dollars (45 million reais at the current exchange rate), which corresponds to the salary the player would have received until the end of his contract with the club, scheduled for June 2027. This amount exceeds the original due to accumulated interest.
Matias Rojas llegó a River tras su conflictiva salida de Corinthians
The Brazilian club had already been sanctioned last year by FIFA, but appealed to CAS, which dismissed its arguments and, moreover, increased the compensation.
In recent weeks, Corinthians' management contacted Rafael Botelho, partner at PVBT Law, the firm representing Rojas, to explore a settlement. The player's camp has shown openness to dialogue, although negotiations are just beginning.
If an agreement is not reached within 45 days, Corinthians could face another FIFA sanction that would prevent it from registering players, since it currently can't sign players due to an outstanding debt with Santos Laguna from Mexico, related to the transfer of Félix Torres.
Corinthians deberá pagarle 9 millones de dólares a Matías Rojas
As if that were not enough, Corinthians has two other pending cases before CAS. It has already been sanctioned by FIFA in both, but appealed: it must pay 4,334,400 dollars (22.7 million reais) to Talleres, from Argentina, for the signing of midfielder Rodrigo Garro, and 1,075,000 euros (6.7 million reais) to Shakhtar Donetsk, from Ukraine, for the loan of midfielder Maycon.
