The tense exchange between actors Ricardo Darín and Julio Chávez: Envy or irony?
Julio Chávez and Ricardo Darín's surprising statements spark an unexpected media clash
Amid the excitement for the premiere of The Whale and the international success of El Eternauta, Julio Chávez and Ricardo Darín became the protagonists of an unexpected media confrontation. The statements of both actors, especially those of Chávez about Darín, caused a series of reactions that did not go unnoticed.
Darín's criticism and Chávez's response
On Sunday, in an interview with Tiempo Argentino, Darín expressed his stance on the physical transformations of actors in film and television. For him, it is not necessary for an actor to radically change their appearance to demonstrate talent. "I'm not interested in seeing strings of supposed skills," he commented, referring to those actors who undergo extreme changes in their bodies, such as gaining weight or portraying characters with disabilities. For Darín, the important thing is for an actor to tell a genuine story.

On the other hand, Julio Chávez, who recently stood out for his role in The Whale, in an interview with journalist Tatiana Schapiro (Infobae) about what talent he would like to steal from another actor. Immediately, he mentioned Darín, highlighting his ability for sociability and his social intelligence. "It's one of the reasons why he has expanded so much," said Chávez.
However, the surprise came when Chávez was asked about his current relationship with Darín. "I don't know him," he stated bluntly, despite having worked together in a soap opera in their early career years. The response was surprising, as both actors had shared scenes in the past and seemed to have a common professional relationship.
Darín's reaction
In response to Chávez's statements, Darín was asked about his opinion on the program Intrusos (América TV). Despite the apparent irony in his colleague's words, Darín, true to his style, opted for a cautious response. "I don't know what happened to him, but I have absolutely nothing against him," he stated.
Darín added that, although Chávez's words had a "hint of irony," he did not accuse him of being derogatory. "It's strange that he says he doesn't know me, I remember him well, I've known him for 50 years," he commented, showing surprise at the lack of recognition. However, at all times, the actor from The Secret in Their Eyes highlighted his respect for Chávez and denied any misunderstanding or envy on his part. "I don't think he envies me, he's doing great," he concluded.

A conflict without enemies
This unexpected clash between two of the most renowned actors in Argentine cinema revealed a possible professional competition, albeit indirectly. While Darín was respectful and conciliatory, Chávez made clear his admiration for his colleague's social qualities, although his final statement left the door open to interpretations about the nature of their relationship.
Both are great in their craft, although of very different styles. Darín, known for his ability to convey complex emotions subtly, and Chávez, recognized for his intensity and more visceral approach, continue to be two of the most emblematic faces of the Argentine screen, although this clash has added another nuance to their professional relationship.
