Texas defeats the Democratic rebellion and approves its new electoral map for Congress

The Texas Senate approved its new electoral map this Saturday, which grants up to five new seats to Republicans in the United States Congress

The Texas Senate approved the state's new electoral map in the early hours of Saturday, and it is expected to be signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott in the coming week. With this new design, Texas becomes more Republican than ever, with the ruling party set to win up to five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The new electoral map was approved despite the fact that the Democratic caucus of the Texas legislature fled the state for Chicago and other Democratic strongholds in order to prevent the vote from reaching the necessary quorum. The opposition rebellion, which lasted two weeks, ended when arrest warrants were issued against the insurgent representatives.

The state congress adopted the new electoral map by a vote of 88 to 52. The rebellious representatives returned to Texas last Tuesday, allowing the legislative process to be accelerated. If the Democratic representatives had not returned to Texas, in addition to being arrested, they would have lost their seats, as they would have been subjected to impeachment proceedings.

Democrats promise to respond to the Texas move.

The new design creates five new seat opportunities for representatives from President Donald Trump's party, thus dismantling districts that were Democratic strongholds located around the cities of Austin, Dallas, and Houston. The map also reconfigures some districts in southern Texas, making them more Republican.

Opposition-majority states, which have been suppressing the will of Republican voters for decades using this same strategy, have promised to redesign their own electoral maps in response to the Texas move. California, for example, will put the issue to a referendum in November, and it is expected that districts whose representatives are Republicans will be eliminated.

Trump's move and Republican leadership.

For this same reason, Trump and Republican leadership have anticipated the response from California and other Democratic states and have invited the governors of Missouri, Indiana, and Ohio to follow the Texas model of electoral redistricting.

Looking ahead to the 2026 midterm elections, one thing seems clear: the Republican Party, under Trump's direction, no longer allows its Democratic opponents to gain an advantage and will fight to the end to ensure its voters are properly represented electorally.
