Just three months after his arrival, and with only three matches managed, Erik Ten Hag was dismissed as Bayer Leverkusen's head coach. According to the German sports newspaper Bild, the negotiation for the arrival of the former Real Madrid player was finalized without the coach's approval, who only learned about the signing after the player had passed his medical examination. Coincidence or not, just six days after that move and following a 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen, Ten Hag was out of Leverkusen. "It was essential to have a certain roadmap, and we missed that," stated Simón Rolfes, the club's sporting director, in a clear reference to the disagreements with the former Manchester United coach.

The Dutch coach, who had arrived with the difficult task of replacing Xabi Alonso, was surprised after his dismissal: "Bayer Leverkusen's decision was a complete surprise. Dismissing a coach after only two league matches is unprecedented."
