The terrorist who attacked President Javier Milei with stones has been prosecuted.

The assailant, linked to a radical left-wing group, was prosecuted without pretrial detention and had one million pesos (£2,205) seized

The federal judiciary ordered the prosecution of Thiago Román Florentín, the left-wing activist accused of perpetrating a  terrorist attack with stones against President Javier Milei's entourage in Lomas de Zamora. The ruling, issued by Judge Luis Armella, acting judge of Federal Court No. 2, confirmed the charges and imposed a seizure of $1 million, although it decided not to order pretrial detention.

The 22-year-old terrorist, residing in Alejandro Korn, San Vicente district, was identified as the perpetrator of the attack that took place last week, when Milei led a caravan accompanied by his sister and Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, and Congressman José Luis Espert. According to judicial sources,  Florentín must comply with strict conduct rules to avoid a new arrest.

Ties to extremist groups

Florentín is active in the Movimiento Teresa Rodríguez (MTR), a left-wing group that defines itself as a "fighter for social change." From that organization, far from condemning violence, they publicly supported him and demanded his release, labeling him a "political prisoner."

On social media, groups linked to MTR and the "Barrios Lomas" collective carried out support campaigns with photos and slogans demanding the striker's release, thus showing the corporate defense of those who resort to violence as a method of protest.

The attack on the presidential entourage

The incident took place as the presidential entourage was moving through Lomas de Zamora. A group of organized opponents began to insult and throw objects at the vehicle carrying Milei, his sister, and officials from La Libertad Avanza.

The attacks included stones thrown at the President and his immediate circle, which forced the urgent evacuation of the President and Karina Milei to another vehicle.  Congressman José Luis Espert reported that even the photographers at the event were hit by the projectiles.

"At one point, stones fell very close to the President, the party president, and very close to me. It became very violent and, for security reasons, we decided to end the event," Espert said, describing the seriousness of the incident.

A threat to democracy

The judiciary is now investigating the responsibility of Florentín and the other participants in what is considered an act of political violence with terrorist overtones, directly targeting the Head of State.

Although the accused will continue the process in freedom,  his actions exposed the risk posed by certain radicalized sectors that, far from democratic debate, resort to violence to impose their ideas.
