An unexpected tragedy shook Italy and the international football scene this Tuesday. Josep Martínez, Inter Milan's goalkeeper, struck an 81-year-old man who was moving in a wheelchair along Via Bergamo in Fenegrò, a town near the team's training center, with his vehicle. The elderly man died immediately, causing a strong shock in the community and within the Lombard club.
Initial investigations indicate that it was an accident. Experts maintain that the man may have suffered a medical episode or crossed the street without noticing the approaching vehicle. After the impact, Martínez, who was clearly in shock, got out of the vehicle and tried to assist the victim until emergency services arrived.
Sources linked to the investigation stated that the goalkeeper is fully cooperating with the Carabinieri in reconstructing the incident. Among the possible causes, investigators do not rule out that the retiree may have changed direction abruptly or lost control of his wheelchair, which led to the collision.
