According to what was published next weekend by the New York Times, the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, is preparing what could be the most important military operation of President Donald Trump's second term. The central focus of that offensive would be Venezuela.
Washington's shift toward a much tougher strategy became evident after the destruction of a vessel operated by a narco-terrorist group in the Caribbean, an event that left at least 11 criminals dead and that Trump himself described as a demonstration that "interception no longer works."
Rubio, in a forceful tone, supported him: "What will stop them is blowing them up... The President of the United States is going to wage war against narco-terrorist organizations."

Rubio increased the pressure against dictator Nicolás Maduro, whom he described as a "fugitive from U.S. justice" due to the drug trafficking charge filed in New York in 2020. The State Department increased the reward for information leading to his arrest to 50 million dollars.
"It is not a government or a political regime," Rubio declared in Quito, Ecuador, and added: "Maduro leads a criminal organization that has taken over a national territory to enrich itself." These words, together with the increased U.S. military presence in the Caribbean, fueled speculation about a possible armed intervention against Venezuela's regime.
During Trump's first administration, the option of overthrowing dictator Maduro was considered, although it never materialized. Today, with the classification of the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and the narrative of Venezuela as a narco-state, the legal and political scenario for direct military action appears much more favorable.

Experts cited by the New York Times state that Rubio is "defining a new paradigm in the hemisphere," reinterpreting the Monroe Doctrine with a strategy that combines military deployment, anti-drug efforts, and pressure on the narco-communist regimes of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
Aware of the threat, Maduro issued a warning: "Donald Trump, be careful, because Marco Rubio wants to stain your hands with blood." A message that reveals just how far the confrontation between Washington and Caracas could soon move from diplomacy to the battlefield.
