The U.S. president threatened sanctions and other measures if the UN starts taxing maritime trade for environmental reasons
The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, published an article in the Wall Street Journal this Wednesday stating that the Trump administration will reject the United Nations initiative seeking to establish a carbon tax on global maritime transport emissions.
"This week, the UN will attempt to approve the first global carbon tax, which will increase energy, food, and fuel costs worldwide. We won't allow the UN to harm American citizens and businesses. Under the president's leadership, this will be a NO. We call on other nations to join the United States in defending our citizens and our sovereignty," Rubio stated.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), a UN agency based in London, is responsible for implementing this "zero emission" framework. The measure would impose charges per metric ton (2,204.62 pounds) of carbon dioxide that ships emit above certain limits. The tax would be between 100 and 380 dollars per metric ton (2,204.62 pounds) depending on various factors, which could translate into an annual rate for companies and countries of 10 to 12 billion dollars.
In response to this delusion, Trump threatened visa restrictions, trade sanctions, and additional port tariffs for ships that are owned or operated by countries supporting the UN framework, as well as sanctions on officials sponsoring climate policies driven by environmental activists.
Additionally, Republican government ministers—including the aforementioned Marco Rubio, Sean Duffy from the transportation department, and Chris Wright from energy—issued a statement opposing this global tax regime that is being sought. They described it as a regime seeking "financial, punitive, and regressive sanctions."
The administration argued that they 'unequivocally reject' the proposal and warned that they 'will fight hard to protect their economic interests', imposing costs on countries supporting the scheme. U.S. officials said last week that "our fellow IMO members should be warned."
