Trump claims that Greenland is essential for the deployment of his Golden Dome missile defense shield

United States President Donald Trump once again positioned Greenland as a central strategic point for United States defense. According to his explanation, the Arctic territory is "vital" for the development and deployment of his advanced air and missile defense system known as Golden Dome, a program that seeks to strengthen the country's deterrent capability against any long-range threat.
"United States needs Greenland for national security purposes. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building", he detailed on his social media. Trump also urged NATO to "lead the way" to ensure that the territory doesn't fall into the orbit of Russia or China, countries that for years have tried to expand their military influence in the Arctic region.
With his characteristic style, the president stressed that NATO would not be effective "not by a long shot" without United States military power, and he recalled that a large part of that strength was modernized during his first term. "NATO becomes much more formidable and effective with Greenland in United States hands. Anything less than that is unacceptable," he concluded.

Tension with Denmark: Copenhagen announces military reinforcement in the Arctic
These statements arose after Denmark's Defense Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, announced an increase in the military presence in Greenland. According to his statement, his country will move forward with more exercises, more troops, and greater cooperation with NATO in the Arctic during 2026. His words came on the eve of a meeting between Danish, Greenlandic, and United States officials at the White House to discuss the future of the territory.
Denmark insists that it keeps a "continuous dialogue" with the alliance on upcoming moves. However, European concern is growing in the face of Trump's firm stance, which considers United States presence in Greenland not only legitimate but necessary to balance the influence of authoritarian powers in the global North.

France also intervened in the debate. Its Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, announced the opening of a consulate in Greenland next February, a decision that seeks "to increase the French presence" and send a clear political message at a time of geopolitical intensification. During an interview, Barrot emphasized that Greenland "doesn't want to be governed or acquired" by United States, although this statement responds more to the European diplomatic narrative than to the growing military dynamic in the Arctic.
The move is aligned with the stance of President Emmanuel Macron, who warned that any United States decision on Greenland's sovereignty would have "unprecedented knock-on consequences". Macron also denounced what he described as "new imperialism" on the part of United States, a discourse that many analysts attribute to European concern about losing strategic influence in an area where Russia and China have already advanced strongly.
