The discovery was made in the Sierra de Copacabana, located in the Ischilín Department, in the northern area of the province of Córdoba. This locality is very close to Ongamira and is accessible from important tourist cities such as Capilla del Monte and Deán Funes. The remains found belong to a vertebrate that inhabited the area during the Mesozoic Era, millions of years ago in this same region.
It is the oldest fossil material that has been recorded so far in the entire extensive territory of the province of Córdoba. The bone that was found measures about 10 centimeters (3.94 inches) and could be a phalanx of a flying reptile technically known as a large pterosaur. The discovery occurred by chance thanks to the observation of specialists who were traveling through the terrain studying the stones in the area.

The area of the discovery is characterized by its reddish rocks and a landscape that attracts thousands of tourists every year to tour this entire valley. For years, people thought that these rock formations did not contain fossils, but this event changes the local history of the area forever. The preservation of the natural environment has been key for these pieces to remain intact despite the passage of millions of years.
A new attraction for the region
The discovery opens the door to future research in a region that has truly enormous geological and tourist potential. Experts confirmed that they will continue working in the area to find more pieces that will complete this great prehistoric puzzle. This type of news enhances the heritage of the sierras and encourages visitors' interest in discovering the hidden richness of our land.
