In response to the growing violence against the Christian population in Nigeria, the United States announced that it will toughen its stance against terrorism

The United States has deployed a small team of troops to Nigeria with the aim of reinforcing the fight against Islamist terrorist groups that operate in West Africa, confirmed General Dagvin R. M. Anderson, head of the Africa Command of the United States Armed Forces (AFRICOM).
The announcement represents the first official confirmation of a United States military presence on Nigerian territory since the airstrikes ordered by President Donald Trump against Islamic State targets last December.
According to Anderson, who spoke during a press conference, the deployment is the result of an agreement between both countries after they concluded that greater joint efforts were needed to confront the growing terrorist threat in the region.
"This has led to greater collaboration between our nations, which includes a small United States team with unique capabilities," stated the general, without offering details about the exact size of the contingent or the specific scope of its mission.

Nigeria's defense minister, Christopher Musa, also confirmed the presence of the United States team in the country, highlighting the bilateral cooperation, although he avoided providing additional information for security reasons.
According to a United States official, the deployed personnel would be playing a key role in intelligence, analysis, and operational support tasks, making it easier for Nigerian forces to carry out more precise actions against groups affiliated with the Islamic State.
Nigeria has faced an insurgency for 17 years led by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP), groups that in recent months have intensified attacks against military convoys and the Christian civilian population.

The northwest of the country has become one of the main centers of violence, generating concern both at the regional and international levels due to the risk of the expansion of extremism and instability in West Africa.
Washington's decision comes amid growing diplomatic pressure on the Nigerian government. President Trump has publicly accused Nigeria of not doing enough to protect Christian communities from the violence of Islamist activists, even going so far as to warn of a possible military intervention.
The Nigerian government has rejected these accusations, insisting that there is no systematic persecution and that armed actions affect both Christians and Muslims.

In this context, the military cooperation between both countries has begun to translate into concrete operations. AFRICOM reported that an airstrike was recently carried out in Sokoto State, in coordination with the Nigerian authorities, which resulted in the deaths of several Islamic State activists.
The operation was presented as an example of the effectiveness of joint work and of the added value provided by United States capabilities in intelligence and strategic support.
United States officials emphasize that the deployment is limited and is being carried out with full respect for Nigeria's sovereignty. Far from being a unilateral intervention, the presence of the team seeks to strengthen local capabilities and contribute to the protection of the civilian population from extremist organizations that pose a threat not only to Nigeria, but to international security.
Analysts believe that the measure sends a clear message about the United States' commitment to regional stability and the fight against global terrorism. By supporting a key ally such as Nigeria, Washington reinforces efforts to contain the expansion of jihadist groups and to prevent West Africa from becoming an even greater focus of insecurity at the global level.
