The Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Scott Bessent, confirmed that the U.S. administration is negotiating with Argentina a financial support package to strengthen exchange rate stability and back the reforms promoted by President Javier Milei.
Among the measures, a USD 20 billion swap line with the Central Bank stands out, the purchase of sovereign bonds, and the possibility of a stand-by loan through the Exchange Stabilization Fund.
A "significant" assistance package
Bessent stated that the United States is willing to "do whatever is necessary to support Argentina and the Argentine people." The announcement comes after meetings held in New York between Donald Trump, Milei, and the economic team. According to the official, the fiscal consolidation and price liberalization carried out in recent months have strengthened recovery prospects.

The U.S. Treasury assured that the potential bond purchase could take place in the primary or secondary market, which would even imply the issuance of new debt by the Argentine government. In addition, work is underway to eliminate tax benefits for exporters of raw materials who settle foreign currency abroad, a measure aimed at improving the flow of dollars into the Central Bank's reserves.
The key points of the ongoing agreement
The plan under discussion covers several direct assistance tools:
USD 20 billion currency swap between the U.S. Treasury and the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic.
Purchase of Argentine bonds in dollars, both in primary and secondary markets.
Stand-by loan through the Exchange Stabilization Fund, considered of "significant" magnitude.
Review of the tax regime for exporters of raw materials, with the goal of strengthening foreign currency inflows.
Immediate collaboration in the payment of debt maturities after the elections.

Bessent emphasized that Argentina "has the necessary tools to face speculators" and anticipated that several U.S. companies are considering making direct investments in the country if the economic program is consolidated.
The secretary also highlighted the role of Trump, who gave Milei an "unusual" backing for a foreign leader. The White House considers Argentina a strategic partner in Latin America and trusts that the structural reforms will lay the foundation for a return to prosperity.
Caputo: "A new era begins"
After the announcement, Economy Minister Luis Caputo expressed his gratitude on social media: "Thank you, Secretary Scott Bessent. Argentines, a new era begins. Let's all work together to make our country great again!"
