Jacy Maranhão experienced one of the most unusual celebrations ever seen in Brazilian football. The captain of Coritiba scored against Chapecoense, dashed to the side of the field to celebrate, and, without realizing that the access was open, jumped over a advertising board and fell directly into the tunnel leading to the locker rooms.

The scene took place at the Couto Pereira stadium during the 2-1 victory of Coxa over Chape in the 22nd round of the Brasileirao. The defender had headed in what would have been his team's second goal and began a celebration that seemed to have a special dedication: he placed the ball under his shirt, a gesture usually associated with announcing a pregnancy, and ran towards one of the sections of the field.

In the midst of the euphoria, Jacy jumped over the advertising board without noticing that there was a gap behind it. The cover that blocks the access to the tunnel remains closed during matches, but opens at the end of each half. With only a few minutes left until halftime, the entrance was already uncovered and the player disappeared from the scene as he fell.

His teammates and those around him immediately reacted to the impact. The defender managed to get out of the tunnel and, despite the scare, received medical attention and was able to complete the last minutes of the first half. However, after halftime, he stayed on the field for only two minutes before being replaced by Rodrigo Moledo due to the discomfort caused by the fall.

To all this, another peculiarity was added: the goal that had triggered the accident-prone celebration was not valid. The semi-automatic offside detection system determined that Jacy was offside and the referee disallowed the goal after VAR intervention.

Despite his exit, the player himself reassured everyone after the match and took the incident with humor. "Look, I'm fine", he replied when asked about his condition. He then explained the reason for his accident-prone reaction: "Defenders don't usually score many goals, but when we do... well, I ended up getting a bit carried away by the emotion".

This is not the first time it has happened

The fall also had a particular precedent in the same venue. In 2014, during a match between Coritiba and São Paulo, the Cameroonian forward Joel scored, ran towards the stands to celebrate, and, like Jacy, jumped over the advertising board and ended up inside the same tunnel.

There was even a striking coincidence: the security man who helped Joel on that occasion was the same one who witnessed Jacy's incident up close twelve years later.
