Luciana Salazar's unusual message about the new Pope sparked a wave of memes

Their reaction to the election of the American pontiff, Leo XIV, provoked ridicule and an outburst on social media

Luciana Salazarwas one of the first celebrities to react to the historic election of the new Pope. But far from going unnoticed, her message set social media ablaze and became the target of memes, mockery, and ironic comments.

The media personality wrote on her X (formerly Twitter) account: "Happy for my daughter," alongside the emojis of the United States and Vatican flags. The post surprised many, as the connection between her daughter Matilda and the newly appointed Supreme Pontiff wasn't immediately clear to everyone.

Leo XIV, the new Pope who sparked online frenzy

The commotion began after the appointment of  Robert Francis Prevost as Leo XIV, following the conclave of cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel announcing the anticipated white smoke, marking the end of the election.

Prevost, of American origin, succeeds Francis after his passing. The news had a global impact, but in Argentina, the focus quickly shifted to the celebrities who reacted on social media.

In this context, Luciana Salazar shared her happiness, arguing  that her daughter Matilda was born in Sarasota, Florida, in December 2017,  through a surrogacy process. This detail was her justification for celebrating the election of an American Pope.

Memes, ironies, and criticisms over her post

Despite her intentions, Salazar's message wasn't well received by everyone. On social media, users quickly turned her tweet into a trend, with a flood of mocking comments that ranged from humor to bewilderment.

Some of the most shared messages were: "Julián Serrano passed by and said 'hey, that's not cool'", referring to the supposed nonsense of the tweet, as happened with the singer's post when Liam Payne died. The exaggerated tone and the disconnect between the papal election and her daughter sparked the creativity of internet users.

Thus, what seemed like a personal display of joy turned into a viral episode. The combination of celebrities, religion, and social media once again caused a storm of repercussions that crossed the religious boundary to fully settle in the digital spectacle universe.
