The harsh 5-1 defeat against the North American national team deepened an atmosphere of distrust between the squad and the Argentine head coach

Marcelo Bielsa's tenure as head coach of the Uruguay National Team is going through its most turbulent phase. The resounding 5-1 defeat against United States not only had sporting consequences, but also unleashed an internal conflict that had been brewing in silence and now appears as a structural problem for the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF).
With only a few months left before the start of the 2026 World Cup, relations between the coaching staff and a significant part of the squad have become a point of maximum tension. That fracture, which has been discussed in Uruguayan media for weeks, is causing concern at various levels of local football.
Journalists who closely follow the Celeste, including Federico Buysan, agree that the relationship between Bielsa and several key players has deteriorated considerably. His messages no longer have the initial impact, while the playing model, which initially caused excitement, has faded amid negative results, controversial decisions, and an increasingly tense internal atmosphere.

Although the AUF is trying to show institutional support, behind closed doors they admit that the situation is delicate. Sporting director Jorge Giordano, one of the key figures in the project, sought to ease tensions after the blow suffered on American soil: "The result hit us hard. But I see Bielsa as strong enough to continue; he's very self-critical. In the face of that pain, there is reasoning, but we must rebuild and move forward."
Another source of conflict lies in the latest drafts. The absence of key names, including Federico Valverde, strengthened the perception of a rift between the coach and part of the squad. Added to this are questions about the decline in collective performance and the lack of offensive effectiveness, aspects that some players are said to have conveyed in private conversations with club officials.
The situation is forcing the AUF to speed up the search for consensus and Bielsa to rebuild internal ties at a critical moment for a project that, until recently, seemed to be on track.
