The House of Representatives approved a resolution this Friday condemning the horrors of socialism, in a strong bipartisan demonstration against the adoption of policies associated with regimes that have historically resulted in authoritarianism and humanitarian crises.
The measure, introduced by Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar (Republican-Florida), was approved by 285 votes in favor and 98 against, with all negative votes coming from the Democratic Party.
The legislative text states that Congress "condemns socialism in all its forms and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States." For its sponsors, this statement is necessary to remind people of the devastating record of socialist governments, especially in countries such as Cuba, the Soviet Union, China, Venezuela, and North Korea.
Salazar, the daughter of Cuban exiles, emphasized that her family personally experienced the repression of the Castro regime, which reinforces the importance of warning about the dangers of contemporary socialism.

The vote took place just hours before the arrival in Washington ofZohran Mamdani, the communist jihadist mayor-elect of New York, who was scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump.
Mamdani's presence in the capital intensified the political context of the debate, since several of his main allies in Congress, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, voted against the resolution.
During the debate in the House, Representative Nicole Malliotakis (Republican-New York), also the daughter of a Cuban exile, firmly defended the resolution and warned that proposals associated with American socialist sectors, such as the abolition of private property or state intervention in production, reproduce the Marxist ideology that in multiple countries led to economic crises, political repression, and systematic human rights violations.

The resolution recalls episodes such as the Soviet famines under Stalin, the millions of deaths in China during the Great Leap Forward, the authoritarian drift of Castroism, and the deep humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. For supporters of the measure, these events show that socialism, even when presented as a project of social justice, inevitably concentrates power in the State and limits individual freedoms.
President Trump downplayed the meeting with Mamdani, stating in radio remarks that he expected a "civil" meeting. Still, he insisted on his differences with the mayor-elect, whom he had previously described as "my little communist."
In the Senate, a parallel resolution was introduced by Senator Rick Scott (Republican-Florida), which demonstrates a coordinated effort to reaffirm the institutional rejection of systems and policies inspired by socialist models.
With this initiative, lawmakers seek to reinforce the country's commitment to democracy and the market economy, warning about the risks of repeating the historical mistakes of regimes that promised equality and prosperity but ended in repression and misery.
