The Vatican sent a delegation to Argentina to advance preparations for a possible visit from Pope Leo XIV, amid growing expectations for a potential papal tour of the country in November.

The president of the Argentine Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Marcelo Colombo, confirmed that representatives from the Holy See toured various locations in the country to assess places that could be included in the papal agenda. However, he clarified that there is still no confirmed date for the trip.

The mission consisted of specialists tasked with analyzing issues related to logistics, security, and protocol. According to reports, the delegation held meetings with national government authorities, members of the Military House, and representatives of the Argentine Church.

The goal of the envoys was to study the necessary conditions to organize a large-scale visit, which would require coordination among numerous public and religious organizations. Such trips typically involve security teams, ceremonial officials, Vatican officials, diplomatic personnel, and dozens of foreign journalists.

Colombo explained that the technical visit allows for the observation of possible scenarios and the determination of which ones have the appropriate conditions to receive the head of the Catholic Church. Furthermore, he emphasized that the analysis is not limited exclusively to religious events but also includes institutional meetings and public activities.

For now, the various dates that have circulated over the past few weeks remain hypotheses. The Holy See still needs to provide a general confirmation before the schedule can be officially announced and definitive organization can begin.

From the government of Javier Milei, it was previously noted that November appears to be one of the most solid alternatives. The potential visit could be part of a regional tour that would also include Peru and Uruguay, although none of those destinations currently have an official date.

The progress of the discussions coincides with a period of greater rapprochement between Argentina and the Vatican. This Thursday, Chancellor Pablo Quirno received the new apostolic nuncio, Monsignor Michael Wallace Banach, who presented his credentials as the representative of the Holy See in the country.

After the meeting, the Foreign Ministry highlighted the historical ties between both States and assured that the government will continue to work to strengthen an agenda based on shared values, dialogue, and cooperation.

The arrival of Leo XIV would have significant meaning for Argentina, as it would be the first visit of the Supreme Pontiff to the country since the visit of John Paul II. It would also fulfill a trip that Pope Francis considered on various occasions during his papacy but ultimately never carried out.

Although the Vatican maintains traditional caution and has not yet officially confirmed the tour, the sending of a specialized delegation represents a new advance in the negotiations. The final decision will now depend on the evaluation of the destinations, security conditions, and the availability of the papal agenda.
