U.S. pressure worked and they freed U.S. citizens imprisoned in Venezuela

Venezuela's interim government has released at least four United States citizens who had been held in the country's prisons. This constitutes the first release of American prisoners to be released since United States military forces captured Nicolás Maduro.
The information was confirmed by the U.S. Department of State, which celebrated the decision as a first positive step by the new Venezuelan authorities.
"We welcome the release of U.S. citizens detained in Venezuela. It is an important step in the right direction by the interim authorities", a State Department official stated.

Political prisoners and promises from the interim government
The releases took place after the January 3 military operation, in which special forces captured Maduro and his wife. Both were transferred to the United States, where the former dictator faces federal charges for drug and weapons trafficking.
This is the first concrete sign of change since the collapse of the regime. The government used the detention of foreign citizens for years as a tool of political pressure, especially against Washington.
Human rights organizations estimate that between 800 and 900 political prisoners remain detained in Venezuela. The interim government, currently headed by Delcy Rodríguez, has promised to release an "important number" of detainees.

According to data from Foro Penal, in recent days prisoners of Italian and Spanish nationality were also released. However, the organization reported that, so far, only 56 political prisoners have regained their freedom, far from what was announced.
Background of releases and a shift driven by international pressure
During his term, President Donald Trump actively prioritized the release of United States citizens detained by the Chavista regime. In 2025, the special envoy Richard Grenell's missionmade it possible to free more than two dozen Americans who were being held arbitrarily.

Under Maduro's regime, many of those detained faced vague accusations such as terrorism or espionage. They did not have judicial guarantees, and they were in a prison system denounced for its harshness and arbitrariness.
The recent releases represent the most visible gesture so far from the interim government after the fall of Chavismo. The combination of military pressure, international isolation, and direct action achieved what years of diplomatic negotiations had not accomplished.
The release of United States citizens thus marks the beginning of a new stage in Venezuela. The regime has been deposed, and a process to dismantle the repressive apparatus is still under way.
