QR payments reached 117.2 million transactions in August, with a year-on-year growth of 67.5%, according to the Central Bank (BCRA). Meanwhile, debit and credit cards recorded declines in the number of transactions and the amounts processed.
The advancement of virtual wallets is also reflected in immediate transfers and public transport payments. The data shows an expansion of digital means against the decline of plastic cards.

Interoperable QR payments mobilized $2.9 trillion during August, with a year-on-year increase of 62.9% in real terms.
Meanwhile, interoperable transfer payments (PCT) totaled 118.3 million transactions. 99.1% were initiated via a QR code.
The distribution between bank accounts (CBU) and payment accounts (CVU) was balanced: 52.7% of transactions came from bank accounts and the remaining 47.3% from payment accounts.

According to the BCRA, there are 92 interoperable digital wallets operating in the country and 67 registered payment transfer acceptors.
The system allows for collections and payments between different wallets, regardless of which application each party uses. Merchants can accept payments with a printed or digital QR code, without the need for a card terminal.

Debit and credit cards recorded significant declines
In July, there were 172 million debit card payments, an 8.4% decrease compared to the same month in 2025. The amount processed fell by 14.7% in real terms.
Credit cards also showed a decline: 159.3 million payments were recorded, a 9.2% year-on-year decrease. The total amount processed decreased by 17.6% in real terms.
During July, interoperable QR payments accounted for 4.8% of the transactions made with credit cards.

In August, there were 779 million immediate transfers in pesos, totaling $96 trillion. The number of transactions grew by 20.3% year-on-year and the amounts increased by 5.5% in real terms.
More than three out of four transfers had a payment account (CVU) as their origin or destination.

In August, there were 26.3 million trips paid with QR, totaling $36.4 billion.
Of that total, 23.5 million corresponded to bus trips and another 2.9 million to various subway lines.

Direct debits totaled 11.1 million transactions in August. In July, ATMs recorded 41 million withdrawals.
The payment system data shows growth in digital transactions and a decline in the number of payments made with debit and credit cards.
