The midfielder would complete his naturalization in the coming weeks and would no longer occupy a foreign player spot
While Boca fine-tunes details in preseason and targets its debut in the 2026 Apertura Tournament, news off the field is emerging as a key boost for the squad's planning. Williams Alarcón is close to obtaining Argentine citizenship, a step that would allow the club to free up a foreign-player slot and expand its room for maneuver in the transfer market.
According to reports, the Chilean midfielder would complete his naturalization between January and February, which he had started last year. Once the process is completed, he will no longer occupy one of the spots designated for foreign players, in a context where AFA regulations allow up to six foreign players in the squad, but only five on the match sheet for each game.
Alarcón liberaría un cupo de extranjero
Currently, Boca has all its slots filled with Alarcón himself, Carlos Palacios, Ander Herrera, Marino Hinestroza, Edinson Cavani and Marcelo Saracchi. It is worth clarifying that in the case of the Uruguayan full-back, his loan to Celtic in Scotland until June doesn't free up a spot.
This way, Alarcón's naturalization would make it possible to organize that scenario and avoid forced decisions when drawing up the list of players drafted. It would also open up the concrete possibility of adding a new reinforcement from abroad, an option that the coaching staff considers key for a demanding season with three competitions (domestic league, Copa Argentina and Copa Libertadores).
The intention of the coaching staff led by Claudio Úbeda is to have all foreign players available without constraints on the match sheet. In that framework, Alarcón's naturalization is emerging as a strategic solution, similar to the one already completed by Miguel Merentiel, who stopped occupying a spot after obtaining Argentine citizenship in mid-2025.
Alarcón's numbers at Boca
Since his arrival at Xeneize at the beginning of last year, the 25-year-old midfielder has played just over 1,000 minutes spread across 26 matches, in which he has not scored any goals, has provided one assist and has received 5 yellow cards.
