Executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama officially confirmed that Yakuza Kiwami 3 will be the last remake within the Kiwami line. With this decision, Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are putting an end to a stage that began with the reimagining of the saga's first titles.

Far from being a simple graphical upgrade, Yakuza Kiwami 3 introduces substantial changes to the story, especially in Yoshitaka Mine's character arc and in the resolution of key events. These changes alter central elements of the canon and create inconsistencies with Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5.

According to Yokoyama, continuing with deep remakes under this same approach would require creating a parallel timeline, which would fragment the main narrative and affect the franchise's internal coherence.

Narrative changes and the risk of an alternative chronology

The changes implemented in Kiwami 3 affect both plot details and structural aspects of the story. If Sega were to move forward with similar remakes of the sequels, Sega would have to choose between:

  • Completely rewriting Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5
  • Creating an alternative chronology
  • Abandoning the classic continuity

The studio decided to avoid that scenario in order to preserve the saga's original identity. In this sense, Yakuza Kiwami 3 serves as a turning point: it closes the stage of traditional remakes and opens the door to new forms of reinterpretation.

Among followers, speculation arose about a possible full reboot or the exploration of alternate universes within the Like a Dragon universe.

Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's future strategy

The end of the Kiwami line doesn't mean the end of the franchise. Yokoyama hinted that the studio could opt for:

  • New series set in the same universe
  • Alternative stories with classic characters
  • Projects focused on protagonists like Kasuga Ichiban
  • Standalone narratives with different rules

In parallel, Sega is continuing to work on other projects such as Stranger Than Heaven and new titles from historic franchises like Virtua Fighter. However, there are still no concrete announcements about future mainline Like a Dragon installments or about a direct continuation of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Community reactions

The announcement sparked debate among fans. Many players who entered the saga through the recent remakes were expecting updated versions of the later installments.

The decision means that those who want to experience the full story will have to turn to the original or remastered versions, which may create differences in the visual and technical experience between titles.

Nevertheless, part of the community appreciated the studio's transparency and the intention to preserve narrative coherence rather than force an inconsistent continuity.

With Yakuza Kiwami 3, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is putting an end to a key stage in the saga's modern history and is leaving open the question of how the Like a Dragon universe will evolve in the coming years.
