The Ecuadorian government rejected the armed attack that took place in Minnesota, United States, in which Democratic Congresswoman Melissa Hortman and her husband died. The attack also left Senator John Hoffman and his wife injured, who remain hospitalized.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condolences to the victims' families and to the affected political community, emphasizing its solidarity with Hoffman and his partner. In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned any form of political violence that threatens the lives of public servants.
According to local authorities, the shooting was reportedly motivated by political reasons, in a context of growing polarization in the U.S. The incident occurred on June 14 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, causing shock both locally and internationally.
The Ecuadorian executive branch expressed its confidence that investigations in the United States will be thorough and that those responsible will face the corresponding legal consequences. Additionally, it reiterated its categorical rejection of acts of violence that seek to destabilize democratic institutions.
