Niels Olsen is investigating the correísta assembly member for alleged collection of kickbacks.
Nuria Butiña's case will be referred to the Ethics Committee following a complaint filed by a former adviser
The president of the National Assembly, Niels Olsen, reported on August 22, 2025, about the opening of an investigation against the legislator from Revolución Ciudadana, Nuria Butiña, following the complaint of an alleged collection of tithes.
The accusation was filed by Iván Castro Velastegui, Butiña's former adviser, who stated that he was required to hand over part of his salary and alter sworn statements, in addition to having been a victim of workplace harassment.
Castro formalized his complaint on August 19 through an email sent to the vice president of the Assembly, Mishel Mancheno, from Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN). The complaint was officially entered into the document management system on August 21.
Olsen stated that the Assembly will not tolerate abuse or threats within its ranks. He therefore convened the Legislative Administration Council (CAL) to qualify the case and refer it to the Ethics Committee for analysis.

The majority in CAL and in the Ethics Committee belongs to the ruling ADN bloc and its allies, which anticipates a process with a strong political component, amid ongoing tension between correísmo and the ruling party.
So far, assembly member Nuria Butiña and the Revolución Ciudadana bloc haven't made any public statements about the case. The silence has caused anticipation regarding the defense they will present in the coming days.
The investigation will be a test for the credibility of the National Assembly. Its results will determine not only Butiña's political situation, but also citizens' trust in the institutional commitment to ethics and transparency.
