Democratic Senator John Fetterman once again distanced himself from his party this weekend by publicly supporting President Donald Trump's initiative to build a ballroom in the White House, following the security incident that occurred during the White House Correspondents Association dinner in Washington.
The incident, which generated concern across the political spectrum, took place at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where a man identified as Cole Allen, 31, a resident of California, managed to cross multiple Secret Service security rings. The suspect managed to approach an area where the president, the vice president and other senior officials were located, setting off alarms about the vulnerability of this type of event outside
highly protected official facilities.
Fetterman, who attended the event, said that he was “in the front row” during the incident and acknowledged having been shocked by what happened. Through his social networks, the senator called for setting aside partisan differences and reconsidering the construction of the ballroom in the White House as a necessary security measure. “After what I witnessed, it's clear that we need this type of infrastructure,” he said, stressing that these spaces would make it possible to organize high-level events in a much more controlled environment
. Democratic Senator John Fetterman launched incredible support for Trump's initiative to build a Ballroom in the White House after the Cole Allen attack.
Trump's proposal envisages a large capacity ballroom inside the White House complex, financed with private funds and designed with advanced security features, such as sturdy materials and
restricted access.
According to the president, the incident shows that hotels, due to their size and number of accesses, represent a significant challenge for security forces. “It's not a particularly secure building. There are too many entry and traffic points,” he said in television statements
.
The project, estimated at about 400 million dollars, currently faces a legal obstacle promoted by the National Fund for Historic Preservation, which questions the impact of the work on the historic value of the building. However, following the incident, the Department of Justice intensified pressure for the organization to withdraw the lawsuit. In a letter sent by civil division officials, it was argued that continued litigation could compromise the security of the president and other key members of the
government. The President of the United States stressed that it is vitally important that the project be carried out successfully.
From conservative quarters, the episode was also interpreted as a warning sign about flaws in security protocols. Some attendees at the event noted that access controls were insufficient, making it easier for the suspect to enter. These criticisms, far from contradicting the presidential proposal, reinforce the idea that relying on spaces not specifically designed for this type of meeting involves avoidable risks
.
Fetterman's support is especially significant in a context of strong political polarization in the United States. His position introduces a high degree of consensus around the need to prioritize the security of the main figures of the State. The senator also warned of the danger of concentrating a large part of the presidential line of succession in one place without adequate protection conditions, which could have serious consequences for institutional stability
