The communist mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, described an increasingly bleak fiscal picture in the city and emphasized the need for additional income, while his officials decided to delay the presentation of the annual budget so as to have more time to negotiate a rescue with the state government.
“New York is facing a budget crisis of historic magnitude. We inherited a larger deficit than any since the Great Recession. Years of mismanagement and chronically low budgets, along with a structural imbalance between what the city sends to the state and what we receive in return, have taken their toll. We cannot close this deficit with savings alone. We need new revenues and a structural restart in our relationship with the state,” Mamdani said
The Ugandan communist characterized the city's financial situation as “a serious fiscal crisis” and attributed the deficit, estimated at 12 billion dollars at the beginning of the year, to the decisions of his predecessor Eric Adams. He also pointed to a historic imbalance in fiscal relations with the state, claiming that the city's revenues were used to “plug holes at the state level, while withholding what was owed to the city.”
