Last year, the Republican-majority Missouri House of Representatives approved a new electoral map that reduced Democratic representation to a single seat, a logical and proportional measure for a state where Trump won with nearly 60% of the votes in 2024.
However, the state Supreme Court overturned the redistricting that eliminated that Democratic seat. In response, the governor's office took the legal battle to federal courts. On Monday of this week, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that using the old map unfairly favored Democrats in this year's midterm elections, thus violating the Missouri Constitution.
"This court holds that Missouri's current plan to use the 2022 map in the November 2026 general elections violates the Constitution. Only the use of the 2025 map complies with federal law and the Constitution. We affirm the district court's ruling and remand the case for a permanent injunction", wrote the appellate court.

But on Friday night, the federal Supreme Court unanimously overturned the Eighth Circuit's decision, in a ruling with no dissenting opinions. The high court maintained that the electoral map could not be modified and that the 2022 map must be upheld, dismissing the will of the Missouri Legislature —an entity made up of representatives of the people— which had approved a fairer design.
This Sunday, President Trump erupted against the Supreme Court for dismissing the Eighth Circuit. "The Supreme Court of the United States simply does not allow Missouri to have an electoral victory. Continuously, now three times, they overturn judges who made the right decisions. Thanks to the governor and all the great people of Missouri, who are fighting so hard for fairness and electoral security", the president expressed.
"What tremendous spirit and love for our country. I won Missouri by a WIDE MARGIN all three times, and I couldn't be prouder to have done so. A great place, I love you all!", he concluded, questioning the recent drift of a Supreme Court whose latest decisions have been contrary to law.
