A new assassination attempt against former President of the United States, Donald Trump, generated shock and opened a federal investigation into possible security breaches during a public event. The attacker was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a California native. According to initial reports, he managed to infiltrate the event and assemble a long gun inside an unsupervised room before opening fire near the control area. The rapid intervention of agents prevented major consequences, and Trump was unharmed, although the episode set off alarms throughout the national security apparatus

The president explained that a Secret Service agent was shot in the chest but was wearing a bulletproof vest. “They shot him from very close range with a very powerful weapon, and the vest did the job. I just spoke to the officer and he's doing great.”
He added that the dinner with the journalists was “an event dedicated to freedom of expression that was supposedly going to bring together members of both parties with members of the press, and in a way it was.” Trump also said that the Hilton Hotel in Washington, where the event was taking place, “is not a particularly secure building.”

Trump then answered a question about why the left still wants to assassinate him.
“Well, you know, I've studied assassinations, and I have to tell you that the most influential people, the people who do the most... take a look at the people, Abraham Lincoln, I mean, go over the list of people who have been through this, when they caught up with them; but the people who do the most, the people who make the most impact, those are the ones they're after. They don't persecute those who don't do much, because they like it that way. And when you look at people who have suffered either an attempt or a completed attempt, they are very influential people. Just look at the names there, the big names. And I hate to say that I'm honored by that.”
