The Democratic Party is accumulating debts and internal pressures are growing for the resignation of its president, Ken Martin

The Democratic Party of the United States is struggling to raise funds and has accumulated so much debt that it is using its party headquarters as collateral for a $15 million loan. In contrast, Trump's Republican Party has no outstanding debts and has $128 million in cash available, according to reports from the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Much of the opposition's financial troubles stem from the 2024 presidential elections in which they were defeated. The party is in the red to the point that it mortgaged the building where its party headquarters is located as collateral for a million-dollar loan, as reported by the media outlet NOTUS on Monday.

In light of the difficult financial situation, many insiders are calling for the head of President Ken Martin, whom employees accuse of mistreatment and adopting a "paranoid" attitude. For now, Martin has the support of the party heavyweights, although lawmakers and political analysts have begun to demand his resignation.

Former Vice Chair of the Democratic Committee, David Hogg, pointed out this week that Democrats should not have someone who does not know how to fundraise at the helm of the party, "much less someone who throws objects at employees," while veteran strategist James Carville suggested that Hogg should take over due to Martin's "dysfunctional" leadership.

The overall political landscape

Despite their financial problems, the opposition is seeking to regain both chambers of Congress in the legislative elections in November. These midterm elections are expected to be a very close contest, partly due to the redistricting process that took place across the country, which eliminated many contested districts in the House of Representatives.

Currently, analysts predict that Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives in a very tight election, while the battle for control of the Senate is expected to favor Republicans.

The opposing party needs to win six of the eight contested races to flip the upper chamber, a political feat that seems unlikely. Democrats would have to win in places like Alaska, Iowa, and Texas, which are states that have not elected a Democratic senator since 2008, and regain seats like the one in Maine, currently held by Republican Susan Collins.
