The United States will expand its military presence in Poland as tensions grow with European allies over Iran.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Thursday the deployment of 5,000 additional soldiers to Poland, a decision that strengthens the U.S. military presence in Eastern Europe and redefines Washington's strategy within NATO amid rising international tensions.

The measure was interpreted as a sign of support for one of the European allies closest to the Republican administration and as a warning to both Russia and European governments that have differences with the White House regarding foreign policy and defense.

Trump confirmed the decision through a message posted on Truth Social, where he directly linked the military deployment to the political relationship he maintains with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, a conservative nationalist leader publicly supported by the U.S. president during the presidential elections in Poland.

''Based on the successful election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, whom I had the honor of supporting, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send 5,000 additional troops to Poland,'' Trump wrote.

The announcement represents a shift from the signals that the White House had recently sent regarding a possible reduction of U.S. troops in Europe. Just days ago, Vice President JD Vance had confirmed the temporary suspension of a planned military deployment to Polish territory and the Republican administration was analyzing a general reorganization of U.S. forces deployed on the continent.

However, the new decision makes it clear that Washington does not seek to withdraw from Europe, but rather strategically reorient its presence towards countries considered more solid partners committed to regional security. Poland has become one of the most important U.S. allies within NATO in recent years, especially after the onset of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The U.S. military presence on Polish territory has taken on a key role in the Western strategy against Moscow. Warsaw has established itself as an essential logistical hub for supplying military support to Ukraine and as one of the European governments that has increased defense spending the most since the beginning of the conflict.

For the Trump administration, strengthening NATO's eastern flank is a strategic priority. Republican officials believe that Poland represents an example of military commitment and cooperation within the Atlantic alliance, in contrast to other European countries that, according to Washington, continue to rely excessively on U.S. military power without bearing equivalent costs.

Since his first term, Trump has repeatedly questioned several European partners for not meeting the defense spending targets set by NATO. The president has maintained for years that the United States bears a disproportionate share of Western security while some allies maintain insufficient military policies.

The support for Poland also has a strong political component. Trump maintains a close relationship with conservative sectors in Poland and publicly supported Nawrocki against the pro-European bloc backed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. After meeting with Trump during the presidential campaign, Nawrocki ultimately won the election and strengthened the strategic alliance with Washington.

Last September, both leaders met again at the White House, and Trump indicated then that the United States was evaluating expanding its military presence on Polish territory. The announcement this Thursday confirmed that possibility.

The decision also comes at a time of rising tensions within NATO over the position of several European governments regarding the conflict with Iran and the situation in the Middle East. In parallel to the announcement about Poland, Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to the meeting of foreign ministers of the Atlantic alliance in Sweden and launched harsh criticisms against some European countries.

Rubio stated that the Trump administration is ''very upset'' with governments that, he said, recognize the threat of the Iranian nuclear program but then refuse to actively collaborate with the operations promoted by Washington.

The head of U.S. diplomacy specifically targeted Spain for restricting the use of military bases on its territory for refueling operations related to the offensive against Iran. ''NATO is good for the United States because it provides us with bases in the region that allow us to project power,'' Rubio declared before departing for Sweden. He then added: ''If member countries like Spain deny us the use of these bases, why do we remain in NATO?''.

The statements reflect the hardening of Washington's rhetoric towards some European allies and anticipate strong discussions at the upcoming NATO leaders' summit scheduled for July in Ankara. There, a new increase in military spending and a broader reorganization of the deployment of U.S. troops in Europe will be debated.

In the midst of the new deployment to Poland, the Trump administration issued harsh statements against NATO for its lack of contributions.
