The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, warned that Washington must stay ''ahead of the curve'' in technological innovation to confront China's advance, which he accused of benefiting for years from the theft of U.S. intellectual property and reverse engineering practices.

The statements were made during a television interview ahead of a new round of high-level negotiations between the United States and China, in which President Donald Trump, officials from his administration, and businessmen from both countries will participate. The agenda includes topics related to trade, artificial intelligence, technology, and economic cooperation.

Rubio stated that a large part of the advancements observed in Chinese industrial, commercial, and technological sectors comes from technology originally developed in the United States. ''Many of the advancements seen in China's commercial, industrial, and technological sectors are the result of the theft of intellectual property and reverse engineering of our own technology,'' he asserted.

The official described the problem as ''enormous'' and assured that the Trump administration plans to address it directly in talks with Beijing. According to Rubio, the United States does not seek to prevent Chinese economic growth, but rather to avoid that growth occurring at the expense of U.S. interests.

''We are not trying to limit China, but their rise cannot happen at the expense of our decline,'' he noted.

Accusations against China for economic espionage and misappropriation of technology are not new. For years, U.S. intelligence agencies and private companies have reported cyberattacks, theft of industrial secrets, and forced technology transfer as part of China's strategy to accelerate its technological and military development.

Washington considers that key sectors such as artificial intelligence, telecommunications, semiconductors, and defense are part of a long-term strategic competition between the two powers. In this context, Rubio warned that the challenge cannot be faced solely through sanctions or trade controls.

Rubio stated that the issue of the constant theft of American technology by China would be addressed by President Trump in his meeting with Xi Jinping.

The Secretary of State emphasized that the true U.S. advantage will depend on its ability to continue innovating faster than its competitors. ''If they are stealing what was cutting-edge technology five years ago, then we must continue developing what will be cutting-edge technology in five years,'' he stated.

Rubio also asserted that China has a clear plan to become the world's leading power and displace the United States from global leadership. ''They believe they will be the most powerful country in the world, that they will surpass the United States, and they have a plan to do it. They are executing it,'' he declared.

His comments reflect a growing concern within Washington about China's geopolitical and economic advance under the regime of Xi Jinping. In recent years, the Chinese government has increased state investments in strategic technological sectors and strengthened industrial policies aimed at reducing dependence on foreign technology.

At the same time, the United States has tightened restrictions on exports of advanced chips and equipment related to artificial intelligence, citing national security risks. The White House fears that sensitive technological developments could strengthen Chinese military capabilities or expand surveillance systems used by the Beijing government.

Technological tensions have become one of the main axes of the bilateral relationship, along with trade disputes, military issues, and geopolitical differences regarding Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Meanwhile, American businessmen accompanying Trump on the visit seek to preserve trade ties with China. Several U.S. companies maintain significant investments and operations in Chinese territory, although they face increasing regulatory restrictions and concerns about technological security.

The meetings between Washington and Beijing occur in a context of increasingly intense competition between the two largest economies in the world. Although both countries are trying to keep dialogue channels open, deep differences persist regarding trade, technology, and international security.

For Rubio and other sectors of the U.S. administration, the challenge posed by China is not limited to an economic dispute, but represents a global strategic competition whose outcome could define the balance of international power for the coming decades.

Despite the strong tensions over Taiwan, the Trump administration assured that diplomatic channels will remain open between both countries.
