Dee Knight, a member of the DSA from New York, later described the event favorably and highlighted the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Knight presented the meeting as a demonstration of "unity in multipolarity" and described the atmosphere in Beijing with enthusiasm.

Internal DSA documents dating back to 2021 also show that members of the organization repeatedly discussed trips to China to meet with officials of the Chinese Communist Party. These contacts were defended by some members under the argument of combating so-called "imperialism."

A group of activists linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has publicly expressed its support for China and the political model of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), generating multiple criticisms regarding the growing closeness of sectors of the American socialist left with a regime widely questioned for its restrictions on political and civil liberties.

At least 11 people identifying as members of the DSA or its International Committee are among the signatories of a statement promoted by "Friends of Socialist China," an organization based in London that claims to have 952 adherents. The document calls to "support, defend, and develop an understanding of Chinese socialism," while presenting China as a fundamental piece for the future of global socialism.

The statement asserts that the global advance towards socialism is essential for the survival of humanity and accuses capitalism of being unable to solve problems such as poverty and inequality. Its authors also link the capitalist system with war, imperialism, racism, misogyny, and environmental destruction.

However, support for China has raised questions because the manifesto virtually overlooks the authoritarian characteristics of the Chinese political system. Under the leadership of Xi Jinping, the CCP maintains practically absolute control over political institutions and exerts strong censorship over the media, the internet, and public expression.

The document, far from presenting these restrictions as an obstacle to the model it defends, positions China as a reference for a future international transformation. Its authors claim that Beijing is one of the main forces behind the construction of a "multipolar" world system and a new international economic order.

They also describe China as a leader in the fight against climate change and go so far as to assert that the survival of so-called Chinese socialism is a fundamental issue not only for Chinese citizens but for all humanity.

The position of these activists coincides with a greater attention from the DSA towards China. The organization launched a monthly seminar last year dedicated to studying "modern China and the lessons for American socialists." The program reflects a growing interest in analyzing the Chinese model as a possible reference for the American left.

Criticism increased after reports indicated that during one of the early seminars, some participants referred to China as a "strong democracy." This characterization is particularly controversial due to the Chinese one-party system and the existing restrictions on political opposition, press freedom, and public expression.

The relationship between sectors of the DSA and Beijing has also transcended internal debates. Shortly before the launch of the seminars, a delegation of five members of the organization traveled to Beijing to participate in the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of China's victory over Japan.

The approach to Beijing, however, has generated divisions within the organization itself. Minutes from internal meetings show that some members have questioned the advisability of establishing such close ties with an authoritarian government.

During one of those meetings, a member of the International Committee expressed their rejection of that orientation and stated that it was not the reason they had joined the DSA. They also questioned whether the organization could be part of a structure that promoted the policies of the Chinese regime.

The episode exposes a central contradiction for the DSA. While some of its members denounce threats to democracy in the United States and advocate for a radical transformation of the political and economic system, others seem willing to praise or minimize the authoritarian characteristics of a foreign government when it adopts a socialist ideology.

The issue takes on greater relevance due to the growing prominence of the DSA within certain sectors of the American left. The defense of the Chinese model raises questions about to what extent the rejection of capitalism and American power is leading some activists to justify governments that limit fundamental freedoms.

More than a simple discussion about foreign policy, the controversy reveals an ideological dispute within the American socialist movement itself. While one sector seeks to present China as an alternative to the Western model, its critics warn that this admiration risks ignoring the political repression, censorship, and concentration of power that characterize the Beijing regime.
