The Justice Department of the Donald Trump administration requested on Monday that the Supreme Court suspend hormone treatments and surgeries for inmates housed in federal prisons.
Last month, a federal court presided over by Judge Royce Lamberth prohibited the Bureau of Prisons from ending this policy and ordered the Trump administration to continue providing medical care to any inmate diagnosed, or to be diagnosed in the future, with gender dysphoria.
This ruling arose in response to a lawsuit filed last year by a group of inmates diagnosed with gender dysphoria who wanted to continue their hormone treatment behind bars. It is worth remembering that, in mid-February of last year, Trump issued an executive order prohibiting the use of federal funds for medical procedures or treatments aimed at transgender inmates in the federal system.
Given this directive, the prison system issued new guidelines prohibiting staff from granting clothing accommodation requests for these inmates and banned the use of federal money to fund such medical interventions.
