The president Donald Trump warned the European Union if it moves forward with the proposal from the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to make Canada the first associated member of the bloc and form a sort of leftist alliance with the government of Mark Carney.
"If they do that, if I consider it in any way a hostile act, I will impose very severe tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things," Trump told reporters on his way to an event in North Carolina yesterday, calling the proposal "ridiculous." "If it's with good intentions, that's fine. If it's with bad intentions, we will impose very heavy tariffs on Europe," the president stated.
Von der Leyen formalized the proposal on Wednesday at an event attended by Carney and said that the possible alliance was to face "an openly hostile world". The borders of the European Union have been at risk since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, while Ottawa has not come up with a better idea than to engage in a trade war with Washington and become more dependent on China.
