The Government of Donald Trump announced this Monday that he rejects the Global Compact for Migration, accusing the United Nations of promoting policies that favor mass immigration to the United States and other Western countries.
Through an official statement from the State Department, the United States confirmed that it did not participate in the second International Migration Forum, held from May 5 to 8 at the UN headquarters in New York. It was indicated that the country will also not support the final document that was expected to be agreed upon among member states.
According to the UN Migration Network, this forum represents the main global platform for assessing the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. In this edition, the goal was to advance a joint “Progress Declaration” among governments.
However, the Trump administration reaffirmed its historical stance of rejecting this international framework. During his first term, in 2017, the then-president had already withdrawn the United States from the process of drafting the compact, which was ultimately adopted in 2018 without U.S. participation. Now, the State Department assured that the government will reaffirm its opposition.
In its statement, the Trump administration was categorical in questioning the immigration policies promoted by international organizations. "As Secretary Rubio said, opening our doors to mass migration was a grave mistake that threatens the cohesion of our societies and the future of our peoples," the official document expressed.
The text also states that mass immigration has had direct consequences in the United States: "Americans have been direct witnesses to how mass immigration has devastated our communities."
And it highlighted: "Crime and chaos at the border, states of emergency in major cities, and billions of taxpayer dollars spent on hotels, plane tickets, mobile phones, and debit cards for migrants."
