President Donald Trumpreacted this Tuesday afternoon to the Supreme Court ruling issued today that affirms birthright citizenship for babies born in the United States to undocumented foreign parents.
"Children born in the United States to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily are 'subject to the jurisdiction' of the United States and are citizens at birth under the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution," wrote the court's chief justice, John Roberts, who authored the majority opinion.
While the majority of the court (5 justices to 4) indicated that, due to this constitutional clause, Congress cannot simply pass a law to strip this right from the children of non-American citizens who are in a temporary or undocumented situation, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, as part of the minority opinion, provided a key dissenting stance on this point.
Kavanaugh noted that, although the Fourteenth Amendment dictates who must be a citizen, it also leaves room to define who can be one by law. Therefore, he argued that Congress could, theoretically, reform immigration law to establish exceptions to birthright citizenship for the children of these immigrants.

Trump's statement
Building on this argument, Trump made an urgent call to Congress to begin working immediately on reforming immigration law and amending birthright citizenship, a measure he described as "costly and unfair."
"The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is a shame for our Country, but we can easily offset it in Congress through Legislation, with the support of the President, something that has already been determined during this process," the president considered.
"A long and cumbersome Constitutional Amendment is not necessary! Congress should start WORKING TODAY to end Birthright Citizenship, which is costly and unfair to our Country. You will have my Full and Total Support!", declared the Republican magnate.
In another post, Trump celebrated a ruling issued on Monday by the Supreme Court that overturns the precedent Humphrey’s Executor and restores to the president the necessary powers to fire without cause political appointees previously designated by Biden in key areas of the U.S. government.
