.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirmed that the objective is clear: to detect irregularities and ensure that benefits have been granted under strict criteria.

Tougher controls over the immigration system

The review comes after internal audits that detected flaws in the controls applied in

previous years.

Officials noted that current standards are more demanding. Therefore, they decided to re-examine already approved files.

The focus is on documentation, background and possible cases of fraud.

Who is affected by the review

The process includes:

  • People who obtained the Green Card between 2021 and 2025 Beneficiaries of asylum and

  • humanitarian programs

  • Applicants with incomplete or inconsistent files

  • Cases linked to countries considered to be at high risk

The review covers both residencies

already granted and requests in process.

What the USCIS process will look like

detailed several stages. First, the reopening of files

.

Then, additional interviews and requests for documentation. In some cases, decisions will be paused until the controls are complete

.

The authorities warned that those who are reached must respond to the requirements.

Possible consequences

If irregularities are detected, the government can move forward with revoking benefits.

Administrative processes could also be initiated. However, each case will be evaluated individually.

Those affected maintain the right to defense and appeal.

Data that explain the decision

Since January 2025, nearly 33,000 suspected cases were referred to research areas

.

This represents an increase of 138% compared to previous years.

The increase reflects the magnitude of the problem detected by the authorities.

National security as a priority

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security backed

the measure.

The objective is to reinforce the integrity of the migration system. Also prevent abuse and protect internal security.

A change in focus on immigration policy The

revision marks a shift towards stricter controls

.

The government seeks to ensure that every benefit is backed up by verified information.

In the short term, this will involve more controls and possible delays. In the long term, it aims for a stronger and more reliable system.
