The FBI has arrested a former employee of a secret special military unit of the United States Army and accused her of illegally disclosing highly sensitive national defense information to a journalist and through her own social media posts.
Courtney Williams, a 40-year-old resident of North Carolina, was arrested Tuesday, April 7 and formally charged Wednesday by a federal grand jury. She faces charges that, if convicted, carry up to 10 years in prison, depending on the extent of the damage and the amount of information
leaked.
Williams worked between 2010 and 2016 for a special military unit linked to elite operations at the Fort Bragg base, and had high-level security clearance. Because of his position, he had access to a wide range of protected data on military tactics, techniques, and procedures employed by U.S. forces

According to prosecutors, between 2022 and 2025 Williams maintained contact with a journalist who was working on an article and a book about the unit. The two exchanged more than 180 text messages and talked on the phone for more than 10 hours. After those conversations, the journalist published the book and a related article, identifying Williams as a source and including statements attributed to her that contained classified national defense information.
Williams' illegal activity also extended to his social networks, where he posted military secrets and was aware of the risks of doing so. According to her relatives, the now accused confessed her to a third party who would probably “go to jail for life
”.
The director of Trump's FBI, Kash Patel, posted on his social networks that the progress in this case is a clear sign that there will be “zero tolerance” for those who compromise national security, especially against those who put the lives of US national security agents and workers at risk.
“When authorization holders violate that trust, the Homeland Security Division will act quickly to demand accountability,” said Assistant Attorney General for Homeland Security, John A. Eisenberg, who will lead the judicial process against Williams and will seek to sentence her to the maximum sentence.
