According to The New York Times, the president of the South American entity allegedly received funds recovered after the FIFA Gate, and the complaint has reportedly been in the hands of FIFA's ethics committee for over a year.
A new controversy strikes South American football and once again puts the continental leadership under suspicion. Alejandro Domínguez, president of CONMEBOL and vice president of FIFA, has been reported to the ethics committee of the highest international body for allegedly having received millions of dollars from funds recovered after the FIFA Gate scandal.
The information was revealed by the American newspaper The New York Times, which stated that high-ranking FIFA officials have known about the existence of the complaint for over a year, although the case only became public in recent hours.
According to the investigation, the accusation claims that Domínguez and another high executive of the South American entity allegedly received more than 5 million dollars fromthe money recovered by the South American confederation following the legal cases stemming from the historic corruption scandal that shook world football in 2015.
The report cites three individuals with direct knowledge of the file, who spoke anonymously and stated that the complaint has already been formally submitted to FIFA's ethics committee.
Domínguez would have received millions after the FIFA GATE.
The complaint generates strong repercussions due to the political weight that the Paraguayan leader currently holds within the international football structure. In addition to leading CONMEBOL since 2016, Domínguez holds one of theFIFA vice presidency positions and has played a central role in the commercial and organizational expansion of South American competitions in recent years.
According to the report, both CONMEBOL and FIFA avoided delving deeper into the matter. From the South American entity, they claimed to be unaware of the existence of such an ethical complaint against their president, while the governing body of world football did not respond to media inquiries made by the American outlet. For his part, Domínguez also did not make public statements regarding the accusations.
The case once again raises the specter of corruption within the leadership structures of South American football, marked over the last decade by investigations related to bribery, television contracts, and irregular financial maneuvers uncovered after FIFA Gate.
