The al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's armed wing, announced that they have lost communication with the group responsible for holding the Israeli hostages Omri Miran and Matan Angrest, as a consequence of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) operations in the Gaza Strip.
In a propaganda statement, the terrorist organization held Israel responsible for the situation, demanding a military withdrawal to the south of 8th Street in Gaza City and the suspension of airstrikes for 24 hours in order to attempt to "rescue" the captives. The demand reflects the essentialization of the hostages as a tool of political and military pressure.
This is not the first time Hamas has directly threatened the lives of the captives. Last week, the al-Qassam Brigades stated that "they will not care about the hostages as long as the Israeli campaign against the terrorist group continues", making it clear that the safety and well-being of the kidnapped Israeli civilians are not on their agenda.

Omri Miran was kidnapped on October 7 from his home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, in front of his wife and daughters. His family released in April a Hamas propaganda video in which he appears dejected and expresses how much he misses his loved ones.
Testimonies from other released hostages confirmed that Omri was held captive in Gaza tunnels until July, although his current situation is unknown.
Matan Angrest, an IDF soldier, was also abducted on October 7. His family revealed that he is seriously injured and subjected to brutal torture, including electrocutions and multiple fractures.
