Mexican authorities, with support from intelligence agencies in the United States and Israel, thwarted an Iranian plan to assassinate the Israeli ambassador in Mexico, Einat Kranz Neiger, according to official sources from both countries.
The attempted attack was orchestrated by the Quds Force, the international operations unit of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, at the end of 2023.
The plot reportedly included the recruitment of agents from the Iranian embassy in Venezuela, a country allied with the Tehran regime whose president, Nicolás Maduro, keeps close military and ideological cooperation with Iran.
The relations between Iran and Israel
A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that the plan was "contained and no longer poses a threat," while emphasizing that this is "another episode in Iran's long history of global attacks against diplomats, journalists, and dissidents".
Washington reiterated that Iranian presence in Latin America represents a growing danger to regional security.
From Jerusalem, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein expressed his gratitude to the Mexican government for dismantling the terrorist network directed by Iran.
"The Israeli security and intelligence system will continue to work tirelessly, in full cooperation with its allies, to thwart Iranian terrorist threats against Israeli and Jewish targets worldwide," he stated.
Ambassador Kranz Neiger, when consulted by Mexican media, confirmed that "those who acted to neutralize the threat were Mexico's security and intelligence authorities", without commenting on the reasons for the subsequent official silence.
Meanwhile, Iran's embassy in Mexico denied the accusations and described them as a "major media lie," asserting that they seek to "damage the friendly relations between Mexico and Iran."
