Clara Brugada defends the security strategy despite the murder of collaborators
The head of government assures that the capital has a solid strategy, although organized crime challenges its effectiveness
Ximena Guzmán, Clara Brugada's private secretary, and José Muñoz, a close advisor, were murdered on Calzada de Tlalpan. The attack, carried out by at least four professional hitmen, has been interpreted as a possible act of revenge by organized crime following recent arrests of criminal leaders.
Despite the attack, Clara Brugada stated that the capital has a "solid, structured, and effective" security strategy. She highlighted a 66.6% reduction in high-impact crimes between 2019 and 2025, and a 10.7% decrease in the first four months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
Investigations and controversies
The Secretariat of Citizen Security suspended two police commanders for alleged evidence tampering at the crime scene. Nevertheless, the CDMX Attorney General denied any alteration of evidence, which has caused greater skepticism among citizens.
Criticism and security demands
This double homicide has caused harsh criticism of the security strategy and has raised alarms about the infiltration of organized crime into public institutions. Various social sectors are demanding forceful measures to curb violence and protect public officials.
This new crime once again casts doubt on the "hugs, not bullets" policy promoted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Analysts warn that this policy has facilitated the expansion of cartels across large areas of the country. The Financial Times reported that these groups have extended their territorial control, given the passivity of the federal government.
Even the United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, stated that the Mexican security strategy "has not worked" and emphasized that the country is facing a serious security crisis.
Clara Brugada's administration now faces growing social and political pressure. While she highlights crime reduction figures, the targeted killings of public officials demonstrate the structural failure of security policies in the capital.
