Mexico to the Abyss: Trump's Tariffs Expose the Ineptitude of the Mexican Government

Trump's tariffs hit Mexico while the government demonstrates its inability to protect the economy.

The imposition of 25% tariffs  by the United States on Mexican products reveals the incompetence of the leftist government, putting the national economy  at risk and severely affecting 12 key states.

Most affected states: the industrial heart in danger

The most vulnerable states, where more than 20% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on export-oriented industries, include:

  • Querétaro
  • Aguascalientes
  • Guanajuato
  • Nuevo León
  • Baja California
  • Sonora
  • Chihuahua
  • Coahuila
  • Tamaulipas
  • San Luis Potosí

These states, engines of the national economy, now face a crisis due to the lack of effective strategies by the federal government.

Industries at risk: wavering economic pillars

The main industries affected by these tariffs are:

  • Automotive:  Mexico exports around 80% of its products to the United States, and 40% of these exports come from the automotive sector.
  • Electronics:  The manufacturing of components and electrical systems, vital for the Mexican economy, will also be affected.
  • Basic metals:  Industries like steel and aluminum will face a decrease in demand, affecting national production.

The lack of economic diversification and dependence on these sectors highlight the poor management of the current government.

Economic impact: an imminent recession

The Mexican economy could shrink between 0.5% and 1% due to these tariffs. Additionally, a strong devaluation of the Mexican peso is anticipated, which will affect citizens' purchasing power and could lead to an economic recession.

Government response: late and insufficient measures

President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her rejection of Trump's measures and announced possible countermeasures. However, these responses seem more reactive than preventive, highlighting the lack of a solid strategy to protect the national economy.

Consequences for the population: rising unemployment and poverty

The imposition of tariffs will directly affect workers in the mentioned industries, increasing unemployment and poverty in the most affected states. The lack of effective measures by the government exacerbates this situation, leaving millions of Mexicans in uncertainty.

The current crisis is a reflection of the leftist government's ineptitude in handling critical economic issues. It is imperative that effective policies are implemented to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on external markets. Otherwise, Mexico will continue on the brink of economic abyss, affecting the quality of life of its citizens and its position on the international stage.
