Mexico reached a historic record in natural gas imports from the United States.
Mexico's dependency on energy sources increased
In 2024, Mexico imported an average of 6,537 million cubic feet per day (mmpcd) of natural gas from the United States.
Marking thus, a 5.9% increase compared to the previous year and setting a new historical record in the energy relationship between both countries.
Growing dependence on U.S. natural gas
Mexico's growing dependence on natural gas from the United States is evident. In 2024, the country imported 6,408 mmpcd of U.S. natural gas, its highest historical level.
This trend has raised concerns about national energy security and vulnerability to possible fluctuations in the international market.

Impact on electricity generation and national industry
Approximately 70% of natural gas imports are destined for electricity generation in Mexico.
This dependence has allowed the country to meet its growing energy demand and has favored the competitiveness of the national industry by offering a more economical and less polluting energy source compared to other fossil fuels.

Diversification of U.S. exports
Although Mexico remains the main buyer of U.S. natural gas, absorbing 30% of total exports, this share has decreased from the 62% recorded in 2016.
The diversification of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to other markets has contributed to this reduction.
Energy cooperation between Mexico and the United States
Recently, Mexico's Secretary of Energy, Luz Elena González Escobar, met with her U.S. counterpart, Christopher Wright, during CERAWeek in Houston, Texas, with the aim of strengthening bilateral collaboration in the energy field.
This meeting underscores the importance of cooperation between both nations to ensure security and efficiency in energy supply.
Challenges and opportunities for Mexico
The growing dependence on imported natural gas poses challenges for Mexico's energy policy.
It is crucial for the country to develop strategies to diversify its energy sources and reduce its vulnerability to possible changes in the international market.
Additionally, investment in renewable energies and the promotion of energy efficiency could contribute to greater autonomy and sustainability of the national energy sector.
The record in natural gas imports from the United States reflects the close energy relationship between both countries.
As well as, Mexico's need to rethink its energy strategy to ensure a secure, efficient, and sustainable supply in the future.
