Mexico City, February 14, 2025. During her morning conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum attempted to read and translate a letter in English addressed to her administration. However, when facing difficulties in understanding the content in real-time, her limited command of the language was evident.
The incident has caused mockery and questions about her preparation, especially considering she claims to be a doctor in engineering and a former academic at UNAM.
The fake "Gulf of America" scandal
The controversy arose after the spread of a rumor about the renaming of the "Gulf of Mexico" on Google Maps.
The Mexican government reacted immediately, accusing the company of changing it to "Gulf of America."
However, the controversy turned out to be fake news, as Google clarified that it never made such a modification. Despite this, Sheinbaum insisted on using the situation to project an image of leadership, without foreseeing that her lack of preparation would make her look ridiculous.
An international embarrassment
Sheinbaum attempted to read Google's response but stumbled several times and showed difficulties in translating the message.
Her clumsiness caused discomfort at the conference and immediate criticism on social media.
This embarrassing episode has been exploited by political opponents and public opinion to question Sheinbaum's suitability in the management of international relations. Opposition leaders questioned her lack of English, pointing out that a leader without this knowledge can't represent Mexico with dignity in international forums.
Misplaced priorities while the country sinks into real problems
It is surprising that, despite her academic background and global aspirations, Sheinbaum doesn't master English, the key language in diplomacy and business.
While Sheinbaum is embroiled in a scandal based on false information, the country faces truly serious problems:
- Security crisis: Violence continues to rise, and organized crime controls large regions of the country.
- Medicine shortages: The lack of medical supplies affects thousands of patients in public hospitals.
- Uncontrolled inflation: The cost of living continues to rise, hitting Mexican families hard.
However, instead of addressing these crises, the Morena government chooses to distract itself with irrelevant controversies and an imaginary battle against a tech company.
A government unprepared to face the world
The 4T has shown its lack of preparation in the international arena. From the diplomatic errors of Marcelo Ebrard to the economic ignorance of Rogelio Ramírez de la O, its officials are not up to the task of representing Mexico with dignity.
This incident makes it clear that Mexico needs prepared leaders, capable of facing global challenges with competence and without making a fool of themselves on international stages.
