From Populism to Totalitarianism: Morena Says Cuba Is Not a Dictatorship
The general secretary of Morena denies the existence of a dictatorship on the island, despite the regime's systematic repressions
Morena has revealed that it wants to impose a dictatorship in the style of Cuba in Mexico. These are not minor or isolated incidents. This time, it was the party's general secretary, Carolina Rangel, who did not hesitate to defend the Castro tyranny.
In a statement that has caused controversy, Rangel stated that "Cuba is not a dictatorship", thus dismissing the countless reports of repression and human rights violations on the island.
The other facts the regime doesn't want to see
International organizations have extensively documented the situation in Cuba. Human Rights Watch points out that the regime imposes a repressive system that punishes practically any form of dissent, a direct legacy of Castroism.
Amnesty International has also denounced restrictions on freedom of expression, arbitrary detentions, and the persecution of activists and human rights defenders.
Repression has been increasing. According to the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights, there were nearly 4,000 repressive actions in 2023, including arrests and political harassment. In the first half of 2024 alone, there were 229 attacks against journalists and activists.
A party aligned with the worst
Carolina Rangel's statement is not an isolated event. Morena has repeatedly shown sympathy for the Cuban regime. On May 1st, a party delegation traveled to Havana, where they signed a controversial cooperation agreement with Miguel Díaz-Canel's dictatorship.
Additionally, in 2021, then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador awarded the Cuban dictator the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest distinction granted by the Mexican State to a foreigner.
This gesture was harshly criticized by various sectors, who denounced the support for an oppressive regime. Morena's affinity with the Cuban dictatorship reveals the type of political model they promote. Denying Castroism's crimes and justifying repression goes against any democratic principle.
