Charles Carrera Leal, former senator of the Broad Front, from the MPP list 609, faces a judicial process for alleged abuse of functions related to an incident in 2012 in La Paloma, Rocha.
In Parliament, he was one of the main figures of the Broad Front in the previous term.
The facts
In 2012, a civilian, Víctor Hernández, was left paraplegic by a stray bullet, allegedly linked to a police event.
At that time, Carrera, Director General of the Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, authorized Hernández's treatment at the PoliceHospital and provided financial assistance, including a monthly payment.

Audio recordings from 2013, broadcast by the television program Santo y Seña, suggest that Carrera asked the victim's family to keep the arrangement secret, which led to accusations of cover-up.
As can be easily seen, his conduct was of absolute immorality.
He took advantage of public resources to spend them at his discretion, and he also used his senatorial seat to exercise institutionalviolence against the family of an innocent victim.

In September 2024, prosecutor Silvia Porteiro requested the lifting of Carrera's parliamentary immunity to investigate him for abuse of functions, although she clarified that she did not request his indictment at that stage.

Criminal indictment
On June 2, 2025, prosecutor Sandra Fleitas formally requested Carrera's indictment for the completely irregular use of the Police Hospital, a significant step in the case.
Although the criminal process has not ended, everything indicates that there is evidence to criminally convict the former Broad Front senator for extremely serious corruption offenses against the public administration.
