Orsi proposes the Temu tax, betraying his campaign promise

The left-wing government betrays voters by breaking the campaign promise not to raise taxes

In August 2025, the government announced that it would include in the National Budget Bill a VAT (Value Added Tax) of 22% for purchases on e-commerce platforms that do not originate from the U.S., such as Temu.

Supposedly, this is to counteract the "Temu effect" that is impacting Uruguayan commerce.

This measure will not affect purchases originating from the U.S. due to the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

An increase in the franchise amount (currently 200 dollars) is being discussed, as well as the possibility of splitting larger purchases, although no specific details have been confirmed.

Violation of electoral promise

During the 2024 electoral campaign, Frente Amplio, led by Yamandú Orsi and Carolina Cosse, promised that there would be neither tax increases nor the creation of new taxes.

However, this measure shows that they are doing exactly the opposite.

They are imposing VAT on this type of purchase, which is not only electoral fraud against the entire country, but particularly against Frente Amplio's own voters who honestly trusted that there wouldn't be more taxes in the country.

Outdated statism

The political and union left in Uruguay is essentially statist; they want to expand the purposes of the State, thereby giving more power to politicians and less power to ordinary citizens.

This measure is a betrayal of the principles of Frente Amplio's own government program, which states that there would be no tax increase.

Not only Orsi and Cosse, but all Frente Amplio leaders traveled throughout Uruguay during 2024 promising and re-promising that there would not be more taxes.

Now they ignore their own electoral promise and this blow is being announced for the coming weeks.

But in less than 6 months of government, this blow is being implemented, which will harm especially the most humble, who are the ones that, through digital platforms, obtain cheaper and higher quality products than those available in the Uruguayan market.

It is another lie, another betrayal, and another fraud by the left-wing government, harming the most vulnerable.
