A car bomb attack in front of a police station in Northern Ireland has once again set off alarm bells about the resurgence of violence in the region. The attack occurred in Dunmurry, just outside Belfast, and is being investigated as an assassination attempt by local police
.
The authorities directly point to terrorist groups, in particular the so-called New IRA, as the main suspects behind the attack. According to the Northern Ireland Police (PSNI), the incident has clear similarities with recent attacks, reinforcing the hypothesis
of coordinated action. The New IRA attack in Belfast
The attack was carried out using a previously hijacked vehicle, in which an improvised explosive device based on a gas cylinder was placed. The car was forced to be driven to the police station before detonating, in a methodology that recalls practices used during past decades
of conflict.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, there were no fatalities or injuries, largely thanks to the rapid evacuation of the area by the police. Among the evacuees, there were even minors, which shows the risk involved in the attack
.
The episode takes place in a delicate context. Although the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 ended much of the violence known as “The Troubles”, dissident groups are still active, rejecting that agreement and maintaining a strategy of
sporadic attacks.
The authorities warned that these groups still have “intention and capacity” to carry out attacks, raising concern about a possible escalation.

The British government condemned the attack and assured that those responsible will be brought to justice, while local political leaders agreed to reject any attempt to return to a past
marked by violence.
The attack not only represents an isolated event, but a sign that historic tensions in Northern Ireland are still simmering. Although peace is generally maintained, these types of attacks show that the conflict is not completely closed.
In this scenario, the authorities' priority will be to avoid escalation and reinforce security, in a region where any episode of violence has a symbolic weight that transcends the immediate.
